HeartPlank® Heart pine:
Indigenous to the Southeastern seaboard from Virginia to East Texas, original Southern longleaf pine grew tall and straight, often reaching 160 feet in height and 400 years of age. Due to its densely grained heartwood, strength, and beauty, long leaf pine quickly became the wood of choice for export by the early colonists, as well as a major source of construction lumber. In fact, the vast majority of commercial buildings erected during the country's industrial revolution in the 19th century were constructed using long leaf pine. At the turn of the 19th century the supply of this original pine was nearly exhausted, and builders started to turn to lesser quality softwood species as an alternative.
Today, this beautiful wood is once again available in limited quantities by recycling timbers from pre-1915, non-historical buildings slated for demolition. Special Hardwood Products, Inc. salvages these antique woods and produces an unparalleled wood floor of unquestionable beauty and warmth. Utilizing the latest European flooring technology, we specially kiln dry, mill and then engineer these antique woods into a 5-ply floor, making it dimensionally much stronger and more stable than ordinary solid antique wood floors.
